Güneş Terkol

Güneş Terkol takes inspiration from her immediate surroundings, collecting materials and stories, which she weaves into her sewing pieces, videos, sketches and musical compositions. The protagonists of her narratives, humorously represented by Terkol in her work, are usually women adapting or refusing to adapt to the social and cultural transformations that affect contemporary Turkey. The act of sewing and using recycled fabrics becomes, in itself, an act of resistance which claims back a form of independent production and widens access to contemporary art.

Güneş Terkol’s recent and upcoming group exhibitions include Better Homes, Sculpture Center, New York, 2013; Whitechapel Gallery, London, 2013; Signs Taken in Wonder, Museum für angewandte Kunst, Vienna, 2013; Turkish Art Nice and Superb, TANAS, Berlin, 2012; Dreams On The River, OrganHaus, Chongqinq, 2011; Dream and Reality, Istanbul Modern, 2011; Destroy Istanbul, Galerie Neurotitan, Berlin, 2011; If the nature is heaven; the city is hell, Cer Modern, Ankara, 2011; White Out, Kunsthaus Erfurt, 2010; 2nd International Antakya Biennial, 2010; états d’âmes, ENSBA, Paris, 2010; Turkish Delight, Galerie Mycroft, Paris, 2009; Unfair Provacation, Hafriyat, İstanbul, 2009; Truths and Mirages, NLA, Sofia, 2008; Connect the Dots, Fargfabriken, Stockholm, 2008; and Sobe, Bilsar Building, Istanbul, 2007. Thora Dolven Balke

Thora Dolven Balke’s practice involves both an exploration of image-making and sound and an involvement in the organization of artistic and curatorial platforms that contribute to the development of other artists’ work as well as their connection with other cultural forms, such as music and performance. Her photographs, in the form of polaroids and photographic albums as well as films, suggest a diaristic, subjective approach to image-making that is not clear about the level of fiction the photographs contain.

Thora Dolven Balke (born 1982, Oslo) has exhibited extensively in Norway and internationally. In 2008 she was part of Lights On – norsk samtidskunst, at the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art. Her work was later part of ‘The Collectors’ as part of the 2009 Venice Biennial. She was one of two curators of the Lofoten International Art Festival in 2011 and co-funded and programmed the artist-run space REKORD in Oslo from 2006 to 2010.
